The men’s track opens the 2021-22 season with a strong performance in the Elm City Challenge

WATERVILLE – The University of Maine at Farmington athletics team scored 103 points and finished second of three teams in Saturday’s Colby College Elm City Challenge held at the Indoor Competition Center of the Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center.

The Beavers were just 15 points behind Colby’s hosting team, finishing third with Thomas College with 94 points.

UMF won individual victories in three events.

Yussuf Adow won the high jump after winning the 6-0.75 height on the first attempt while his teammate Henry Scheff took second place after winning 6-0.75 on the third attempt.

Garrett Jones took first place in the triple jump with 13.02 m (42-8.75), displacing Colby’s Kevin Yan by three quarters of an inch.

Eventually, Alixx Canwell logged a 12.07 m (39-7.25) throw to lead UMF’s 1-2-3 sweep in the shot put. Turner Schnee (11.52 m / 37-9.5) came second, followed by Alex Sheran (10.68 m / 35-0.5) in third place. Canwell also finished second in the weight throw with a throw of 11.73 m (38-6).

At the track events Abshir Abukar was among the front runners with his second place over 400 m with a time of 53.94 seconds. In the 60-meter hurdles, Scheff also took second place with a time of 9.33 seconds.

The UMF athletics teams will return to the track on Saturday, January 15th when they travel to Braunschweig to compete at the Bowdoin College Peter Slovenski Invitational.

Women’s athletics opens indoor season at Colby’s Elm City Challenge

WATERVILLE – The University of Maine at Farmington track and field team opened its 2021-22 season with a runner-up of three teams in Saturday’s Colby College Elm City Challenge, held at the Indoor Competition Center of the Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center.

The Beavers scored 70 points, ahead of third-placed Thomas College with 59 points and behind host Colby with 146 points.

Emily Hargreaves’ individual runner-up in the weight litter was the best UMF performance of the day. She logged a throw of 10.72 m (35-2) with a pair of throwers from Thomas College in between, taking first and third place.

The Beavers took three third places during the day. Anna MacDonald finished third in the women’s mile run with a time of 5: 59.88, and Emily Eaton took third place in the 3000 m after crossing the finish line in 12: 44.05. In the field competitions, Kaitlyn Harmon-Bolding came third in the shot put with a throw of 9.20 m (30-2.25).

The UMF athletics teams will return to the track on Saturday, January 15th when they travel to Braunschweig to compete at the Bowdoin College Peter Slovenski Invitational.
