BERKELEY – Two members of the Cal men’s rowing team will compete in the 2022 World Rowing Championships in Racice, Czech Republic, September 18-25.

Graduate transfer Gus Rodriguez will represent the United States as a sophomore Timo Roth will compete for Switzerland. Both Golden Bears compete in the men’s foursome for their respective countries.

Rodriguez was named an Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association (IRCA) First Team All-American and US Rowing Under-23 Co-Athlete of the Year last year as a senior in Brown. He also finished third in the International Rowing Association Championship and finished second in the Eastern Sprints. Previously, Rodriguez represented the USA at the 2021 U23 World Championships, finishing second in the men’s eights.

Previously, Roth competed at the 2021 U23 World Rowing Championships in Racice, winning bronze in men’s doubles sculls and at the 2020 U23 European Rowing Championships in Duisburg, Germany. He previously won bronze in the men’s singles at the World Rowing Junior Championships in Tokyo in 2019 and bronze in the juniors’ singles at the European Rowing Championships in Essen, Germany in 2019. Roth was sixth last year from undefeated Cal Varsity 8+ who later won the national championship.

Rodriguez and Roth are the latest in a line of Cal rowers competing at the world championship level this year. Last July, eight bears competed in the U23 and U19 World Championships at Lake Varese in Varese, Italy.

Three other Cal alumni will also compete at the Worlds. Martin Mackovic will drive for Serbia in the men’s doubles, Niki van Sprang for the Netherlands in the men’s eights and Jack Cleary for Australia in the men’s singles.
