Tuesdays with Toyota puts the most dedicated members of the USATF in the spotlight.

Meet Ronald Pate, a USATF Volunteer, Masters Athlete, and USATF Hawaii Association member from Honolulu, Hawaii.

“I was with the USATF from the start in 1964 when it became AAU and then TAC (The Athletics Congress) that later became USATF. In 1986, I became sanctions administrator for the Hawaii Association for organizing 25 events.

I had competed in track and field races for over 20 years when I discovered my interest in endurance racing in 1984 with the aim of becoming one of the best in the United States. In my first 10 km run, I finished 12.25. Place of 3,900 runners and was 280th in my age group. I became the USATF 10k Age Group Champion in 2012 after winning the Masters National Championship in 2005, two days after winning my third USATF 3000m steeplechase championship.

I have raced on Team USATF over the years as a Masters athlete in Italy, France, Spain, Finland, Hungary, Poland, Canada, Korea and Costa Rica and had the thrill of hearing the national anthem from the top of the podium.

I have been involved with youth athletes in the USATF development programs for more than 30 years in higher education and in their careers.

I have attended most of the USATF annual meetings since 1990 and have had the privilege of meeting and working with many great people who are involved in the USATF.

Since athletics, coaching and long distance running were a lifestyle for me, it seems appropriate that I tried to give back some of what this sport has given me. I am grateful that through my involvement with USATF, I have the honor of meeting so many great people and making so many wonderful friends around the world.

Athletics was my first real love and it still has a positive impact on my life. There are so many memories of racing around the world as a member of Team USATF. Most importantly, I have my wife with me who has supported me in my endeavors over the years. As long as I live, I plan to participate in the USATF. “
