A message from SPHS Sporting Director Anthony Chan

Dear tiger families,

It’s been an incredible sports year so far in the 2021-2022 school year. Building on the successes of recent years, four of our seven autumn programs have been promoted to the CIF divisions. I’m also happy to report that every single team made it to the playoffs this fall season. In addition, our programs continue to adhere to current safety guidelines to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and none of our teams were forced to cancel a game due to Covid.

Here are some notable highlights from our teams:

  • In Cross Country, both boys and girls qualify together for the CIF State Meet compete against the best cross-country teams in the country for the first time in school history. Boys took 1NS in the league and girls took 2nd in league.
  • Football reached the CIF-SS semi-finals for the first time since the 1970s, missed the championship game in the final seconds. That year they also beat our historic rival San Marino and won the 67th placeNS annual matchup. Football took 3approx in league game.
  • Girls Tennis rose to the CIF-SS Division 2 and played a tough match against Temescal Canyon in the first playoff round.
  • Girls Golf rose from a CIF SS division to Division 2. Individually, we’ve had student athletes competing at the top levels of CIF golf and making the Southern State Regional Championship by competing in the top 28 players in CIF-SS against all of Southern California. As a team, they took 2nd in league.
  • Girls Volleyball continues to be one of the toughest girls’ volleyball programs in the San Gabriel Valley, ending with two epic showdowns with La Canada High School and back-and-forth matches up to 5th grade. achievedNS and the last set on both occasions to jam-packed gyms. They also rose to division 1/2 and took 2nd in league.
  • Boys Water Polo promoted to the CIF-SS Division 2 and played a tough out-of-league schedule to prepare them for the playoffs after promotion to a division. They took 1NS in league.

For the first time, we were also able to make full use of all the refurbished systems. Our film room is frequented by many of our teams and uses the cloud-based video service of our sports program in Hudl. The teams use the game breakdown and statistics service, exchange films about our opponents, analyze our gameplay, and use these videos to create highlight tapes for college recruiting.

In the training room, we are happy to continue our partnership with the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and provide our programs with a full-time sports trainer in Amanda Zamani. The training room is a perfect example of a modern athletics training room equipped with digitally controlled temperature whirlpools to allow our athletes to recover quickly.

Additionally, our collaboration with Healthy Roster helps us log in and keep track of all services that are being performed through our login kiosk when they enter the classroom. The renovated weight room was also frequently used by all of our student athletes; We are grateful for all of our coaching team’s contributions to the design, layout and equipment in the weight room.

Given all of this, our student athletes are becoming better students of the game, recovering faster, and becoming stronger and less prone to injury through our renovated facilities.

As we are almost completely immersed in the winter season, I would like to remind everyone that we will continue our Covid testing for teams during the season on Mondays. You only need to register once and instructions for this exam have been distributed by the coaches, team parents and me.

I also wanted to remind everyone that when a bus or transportation is provided for a team, the windows must be closed and masks must be worn. If a bus is planned, all athletes must use it; However, once per season parents can email me and their coach at least 24 hours in advance that they are bringing their child to / from a game. The coaching staff and I agreed on this, as it is extremely difficult to follow when several people are sitting or getting off the bus at many different games and trips.

All athletic approvals must be done online, including uploading the physical exam from a licensed doctor. Physical exams are valid for up to 1 year. When they expire, Healthy Roster will notify you to upload a new physical exam.

Some final thoughts: if your student athlete doesn’t have a SAC card, I highly recommend doing so as they will play in all of our home games without playoffs for free, with the proceeds from the sale of the SAC card going to help pay for a wide variety of sports Costs. The SAC Card also offers discounts on a variety of student activities!

Our SPHS Booster Club continues to support our programs by providing resources to our athletics, school clubs and programs. The only way the booster club can help is by providing nearly $ 35,000 annually in grants to sports teams, school clubs, and programs. Participation is at an all-time high, with more Booster Club memberships than in the past. It’s not too late to take part!

Finally, I wanted to thank the families and the South Pasadena community for coming together and supporting our athletics program. The participation in games has never been higher and our coaching team has encouraged our teams to come out and support one another. We have proven in many ways that we are “one city, one team”. As we emphasize in all of our programs, it is about teamwork. Our team is a city, a tiger family. Hope to see you all soon in a competition!

Sincere,

Anthony Chan – Athletic Director
South Pasadena High School
