Rochdale News | News Headlines | Church to help people become savvy with their cash as households feel income squeeze

Date published: 26 February 2022

A church is set to run free sessions to help people in Syke, Rochdale, get on top of their household finances.

Members of Syke C of E Community Church in Rochdale wanted to help their local community to best handle the current cost of living crisis so underwent specialised training from UK charity Christians Against Poverty (CAP).

Now they are offering the short course aimed at putting the joy back into money by teaching people how to chart their household income and take control of their expenditure.

Money coach Steve Tomkins, who will be leading the sessions called the CAP Money course, said: “We’re all feeling the squeeze on our wallets right now, with big jumps in groceries, sky-high fuel prices, not to mention the 54% increase in gas prices we’re all facing in April.

“We all need to be savvier with our money to get through these tough times. Knowing how to save and budget effectively will be a big help for the whole family.”

Syke C of E Community Church is one of more than 1,000 churches of different Christian traditions across the UK regularly offering the course, as they work together to positively impact the communities around them.

The CAP Money Course has been found to be useful for newly retired people, soon-to-be students, single parents dealing with mounting bills, couples saving for a wedding and everyone in between.

He added: “It’s really helped us get a grip on our finances. We hope that we can help other people to take back control of theirs too, instead of relying on guesswork, so we can all weather the storm and plan for the future.”

The first course takes place at Syke Community Base, Syke Road OL12 9TF, starting on Monday 28 February.

Participants can choose between a morning session from 9.30–11.30am or an evening session from 7.30–9.30pm.
