Intercollegiate Sailing Claims Chesapeake Invitational Victory

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy Intercollegiate Sailing Team had a relatively easy weekend of competition on Saturday and Sunday with only two home events in Annapolis.

Both days there were light winds in the morning causing delays, followed by picking up winds in the afternoon which were around 10-15 knots.

The Faye Bennet MAISA Women’s Singlehanded Championship featured a field of 17 boats from across the conference, including two midshipmen. The Navy sailors put up some strong races but struggled to keep up in the stronger winds as the duo were two of the smallest sailors in the field. In the end Junior Aubin Hattendorf ended up 10th overall in his second year Izzy Fadullon turned 12

The Chesapeake Invitational was held on the same course as the Faye Bennett Regatta, with six three-boat teams from across the Chesapeake Bay competing in a combined division format. Navy came out of the gate strong and built an early lead before inconsistent sailing later in the day saw the team drop to third place by the end of Saturday. The team showed strong again on Sunday, quickly defeating St. Mary’s and Georgetown to claim the overall victory.

In the combined division senior Gavin McJones and newcomer Ellie Alex was the overall winner. The juniors followed in second place Madeleine Smithsecond grader Ryan Wahba and freshman Nathan Smith while the seniors crew Colin MacGillivray and Caden Scheiblauer and freshman Margo Cicero placed 12th.

The Navy Intercollegiate Sailing Team continues its season this coming weekend at the Intrepid MAISA Match Race in Kings Point, NY, the Oyster Bowl in St. Mary’s City, Maryland and the Webb/Woollum Regatta in Newport News, Virginia.
