PHILADELPHIA – The head coach of the University of Pennsylvania women’s rowing, Wesley NgHe has announced the hiring of Helen Samaniego as assistant coach on his staff.

Already a veteran of Boathouse Row, Samaniego has trained at Lower Merion High School, Conshohocken Rowing Center, and Vesper Masters Programs for the past several years. She joins in Kumari Lewis as assistant in the staff of Coach Ng.

“I’m excited to work with Helen for her experience and accomplishments as an NCAA champion, national team rower, world championship medalist and inspiring coach,” said Ng. “She knows what boats need to row at championship speed and how to recognize and teach the skills and ethics required to achieve those goals.”

“It is a privilege to be part of the Penn rowing family,” said Samaniego. “I look forward to building on Penn’s rowing skills and competitive hard work.”

Samaniego trained as an elite rower for eleven years, qualified for two senior and three U-23 national teams and retired after the Olympic trials in 2021, where she competed in the women’s lightweight doubles. Samaniego won a silver medal in the women’s lightweight quad at the 2013 World Rowing Championships – a boat that was trained by Ng. At the 2012 Olympics, she finished fourth in a pair.

Former Helen Tompkins, who has been a rower in Houston, Texas since she was eight, graduated from the University of Virginia with a double degree in Foreign Affairs (Latin America) and Studio Art (painting) with a minor in architecture. As a senior in 2010, she helped the Cavaliers win their first NCAA championship in women’s rowing at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, California.
