PHILADELPHIA – A native of West Cester, Pennsylvania, William Pinamont III is one step closer to his dream of serving the nation as a Navy doctor June 17 – a date that also marks the 123rd birthday of the US Hospital Corps this year marked.

On his way to his dream, Pinamont also carries on his family legacy of military service and becomes the fourth generation to serve in the army. His father, retired Navy Captain William Pinamont Jr., served as the commandant.

“I would say that the family aspect definitely played a big role in my decision to participate [the Navy]”Said Pinamont. “My father served growing up and it was always a part of our lives and a consideration. And when his brother, my uncle, was deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan, it was one of the big hit home moments for me. I’ve always thought about the military, but I knew I wanted to go to the Navy and I knew I always wanted to be a doctor. “

Pinamont worked hard towards his goal of serving and healing people. He studied biology and received a Masters of Science degree in anatomy, produced and published research, excelled as an athlete in men’s rowing while honing leadership skills that he will use as a naval officer through training and mentoring graduate and medical students.

Now, a freshman medical student at Penn State College of Medicine, he has applied for the US Navy Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP).

“The more I learned about the HPSP opportunity and the ability to become a medical officer, speak to and learn from other medical officers, confirmed my commitment to wanting to do so,” said Pinamont. “And I am honored to have the support of my family, my girlfriend and all of my friends who understand this path and go with me.”

To begin the HPSP commissioning path, Pinamont contacted a local medical officer recruiter for the Navy Talent Acquisition Group Philadelphia, Hospital Corpsman 1st Class David Cooley, a New York native.

“From the moment I met him, Ensign Pinamont showed humility, trust, respect and conscientiousness,” said Cooley, who guided Pinamont through the application and submission process. Cooley was also honored to serve as Master of Ceremonies during the ceremony and delivered the first salute to the newly appointed officer.

“I am very proud to be a Hospital Corpsman. So helping someone achieve a goal they set for the Corps’ 123rd birthday means a lot to me, ”said Cooley. “When I was asked to serve as the MC, [Master of Ceremonies] and to make the first greeting, I was humble that I would be given such a great honor and responsibility. This is one of the most memorable commissioning ceremonies I have had for each of my applicants. I have no doubt that Ensign Pinamont will excel as a doctor and above all as an officer in the largest navy in the world! “

With the support of family and friends whose mentorship is rich in military expertise, Ensign Pinamont’s goal of becoming a naval doctor is now within reach. After graduating from the College of Medicine, he will serve in the country in the Navy’s Medical Corps.
