LAS CRUCES, NM – Chris Jans“The group of assistant coaches again comprises a trio of individuals.

The Aggies ‘fifth-year basketball coach announced Tuesday that Dominique Taylor has agreed to join Jans’ staff as an assistant coach for the 2021-22 season and beyond.

“We are very pleased that Dominique has decided to join our men’s basketball team,” said Jans. “Coach Taylor is respected by his peers for his skills, dedicated personality, and work ethic. Those qualities will enable him to make an immediate difference with the aggies now in our program and future ones.”

Since the 2017/18 season, Taylor has been the men’s deputy basketball coach at MEAC Bethune-Cookman University. In Taylor’s four seasons as part of the Wildcats coaching staff, the program recorded an overall rating of 48:45, including a 31-17 performance in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) showdowns. During his final months at Bethune-Cookman, Taylor held the title of interim head coach after Ryan Ridder accepted the position of head coach at UT-Martin in late March 2021.

Taylor helped teach a trio of 2017-18 MEAC Major Award winners for Player of the Year Brandon Tabb, 2017-18 Defensive Player of the Year Soufiyane Diakite, and 2018-19 Defensive Player of the Year Cletrell Pope. With this pair at the top of the squad, Bethune-Cookman secured a stake in the regular-season MEAC title for the second time in the program’s history.

Taylor moved to Bethune-Cookman after a season as the men’s basketball coach at Southeastern Illinois Community College. His only season as head coach of the Falcons came after a year as assistant coach at Chipola College in Marianna, Florida. That year (2015-16), Taylor helped take the program to a 17-13 mark.

Prior to joining the Chipola coaching staff, Taylor worked with current Tennessee Martin head coach Ryan Ridder as an assistant coach in the state of Daytona. Along with Ridder, Taylor turned Daytona State around in their first season (2013-14) by turning a program that had only run 6-25 the previous season into a 24-6 powerhouse that would win the Mid- Florida Conference won. That year, the Falcons finished the campaign in 10th place on the NJCAA and all sophomores graduated with their associate degrees.

Taylor’s first NCAA Division I coaching opportunity came in 2011-12 when he began a two-year stint in South Alabama as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Jaguars. The Jaguars finished the Sun Belt Conference near the top during Taylor’s tenure, with the team finishing second in the league standings in a row. Taylor had the special honor of mentoring Sun Belt Player of the Year and NCAA All-American Augustine Rubit of Houston, Texas. The Jaguars were also successful on the recruiting path, collecting successive high-level recruiting classes in the Sun Belt during Taylor’s stay in Mobile, Ala.

Taylor began his career coaching in junior college, particularly Neosho County Community College in Chanute, Kan., Where he served on the men’s basketball coaching staff for two seasons from 2009-2010. He helped lead the Panthers to a season of 20 wins in the 2009-10 season and coached six players who went to NCAA Division I schools, including Antione Lundy, a 2009-10 NJCAA All-American.

The 2009-10 Panthers were the top rebound team in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference, including Lundy’s leading 13.7 average, and finished third in the KJCCC Eastern Division with a 12-6 mark.

Taylor acted as the recruiting coordinator, assisting with all aspects of the program, including on-site coaching, practice planning, academic progress, travel planning, and scheduling. He was also involved in the team’s public relations, fundraising and promotional activities.

In addition to his coaching roles at NCCC, Taylor was an associate faculty member teaching undergraduate courses in personal training and basketball coaching.

As a player, Taylor played for Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the Southland Conference. From 2005-08, Taylor was an integral part of the Islanders roster, helping lead the team into a trio of more than 20 winning seasons. With him at their side, the 2006/07 season saw the Islanders experience their best season in program history. That year, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won the regular season title in Southland before winning the Southland Conference Tournament and receiving the program’s first (and so far only) application for the NCAA tournament.
