Bill Manning named associate head coach of La Salle Rowing

PHILADELPHIA Bill Manning, a nationally respected coach who has worked with elite college and Olympic level rowers, has been named deputy head coach at La Salle, chief rowing coach Jeff Garbutt announced on Wednesday.

“Bill’s addition to our staff shows the university’s commitment to returning the rowing program to participants in Dad Vails, Atlantic 10 Championships and beyond,” said Garbutt. “Having trained in two top 10 multi-year programs (Harvard, Princeton) and with the United States National Team, Bill brings an unparalleled level of experience and knowledge. I am thrilled to be working with Bill and developing the new one La Salle Rowing culture and learn from its incredible experiences in sports. ”

Before arriving in Philadelphia, Manning spent eight seasons at Princeton University, working with the women (2019-21) and the men (2013-19). Last year, the Tigers finished 12th in the NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships and won four gold medals in the Dad Vail Regatta.

Manning worked with the Princeton lightweight men and was an integral part of consecutive silver medals at the IRA National Championships. He also helped the team win four Harvard / Yale / Princeton Regatta championships, Eastern Sprints titles in 2016 and 2018, and three consecutive IRA medals with the LM4- and LM4 +, including a national title in 2015.

Prior to Princeton, Manning spent 15 years at Harvard and was Associate Head Coach at Harvard under Harry Parker from 2011-13. In both 2012 and 2013, Harvard won the Rowe Cup in the Eastern Sprints and swept Yale. The first university won the Eastern Sprints and the Ivy League Championship in 2013.

The team also won medals at the IRA championships (bronze 2012, silver 2013). At the Henley Royal Regatta, Harvard’s crews won the Prince Albert Cup (2011), Ladies’ Challenge Plate (2012) and Visitor’s Challenge Cup (2013).

As a freshman coach from 1998 to 2011, Manning’s teams were among the best in the country and in the world. In both 2001 and 2002, Manning’s group won the Temple Challenge Cup in Henley. Manning won medals in the eastern sprint in twelve of his thirteen years, including seven victories.

The newcomers also competed in the IRAs from 2003 to 11 and won three silver medals and three bronze medals. Manning’s first freshman boat has not lost a double race in its last five seasons, beating 35 consecutive opponents between 2007 and 11. The Newbies also defeated Yale in The Race in eleven of Mannings’ thirteen years.

In addition, he took Harvard to the World Cup in Lucerne in 2004, where they competed as USA-2, defeated the British and French Olympic teams and reached the A-final.

At the international level, Manning has been with the United States national rowing team since 1996. Between 1997 and 2002, Manning was the assistant coach of the US junior national team at five junior world championships and coached the US men’s couple up to Olympic qualification at the 2003 world championships. At the 2004 Athens Olympics, he worked with the pair, doubles and lightweight. In 2006 and 2007 he directed the US U-23 male sculling program.

Most recently he trained the U23 LM4x in fourth place at the 2019 World Cup. In the previous year he was Head Coach of the USA at the Youth Olympic Games and was responsible for the M1x and W2-. He also coached the U-19 women’s team and won two bronze medals at the world championships. In 2015, he led the LM2 to fifth place in the Senior Worlds, the US’s best in over a decade. In the same summer he won his LM4- silver, his M2- won bronze and he was assistant coach of the bronze medalist M8 + at the Pan American Games.

Manning earned an M. Ed. from Harvard and a BA from the College of the Holy Cross.
