CHINA GROVE – Carson junior sprinter Aliayah White came out of nowhere in her rookie high school track season, leading the Cougar girls to the Rowan County and North Piedmont Conference championships.

She’s just athletic and a super tough competitor, ”said Carson coach Les-Lee Ihme. “I hate that she missed her first and second seasons because who knows how good she could be now.”

It was pretty good already.

White, who earned a state championship ring as a reserve for Carson’s basketball team, can apparently run as fast as she needs to run to win. She didn’t lose any of the sprints in the regular season.

White is the Post’s Female Athlete of the Year.

At the 3A State Championships, where White was awarded a seventh place in the 400, technically no one crossed the finish line before her. She ran a PR of 59.91 seconds. She actually took first place in her run, but ran in the slower of the two time trials.

“Usually sprint events in the states have preliminary rounds so that the six fastest can actually compete against each other for the championship,” explained Ihme. “But that wasn’t the case this year. I wish Aliayah could have been in the faster heat or that they did it the old way (with prelims) because there’s no telling how it would end. It feeds on the competition. She was doing a PR in the States because she needed it to win her heat. Could she have run 56-something in the faster heat to win the state championship? I really think she could have it. I don’t think she really knows how fast she could be. “

White swept the 100, 200 and 400 strokes at the Rowan County Championships in May and repeated that feat at the North Piedmont Conference Championships in early June.

She combines raw speed with the heart, stamina, and stamina it takes to win the 400.

At the county and conference meetings, White added big points to the Cougars in the high jump. She took third place in the circle, second place in the conference.

She was pretty good at the high jump, ”Ihme said. “It is small, but it can almost skip its size.”

White was the 3A West Regional Champion in the 400. She officially finished third in the 200 in the Regional – despite winning her run again.

Ihme said White was great when she felt 100 percent and was still adamant on the days when she had to dig deeper.

White was battling a nagging quad injury towards the end of the season. This led to her passing on the 100 in the regional to be fresh for the 400, her best event.

At the 3A state championships, she injured herself again while running the 200cc quad and had to start up.

But when she was healthy she was the first to finish. Every time.

“She doesn’t like to lose and she won’t do much,” said Ihme. “If she continues to work on her speed and endurance in the off-season, she will be national champion.”

White is the Post’s Female Athletics Performer of the Year, but good as she was, it’s just the narrowest edge.

It’s easy to argue for North Rowan newcomer Aniya Brown, who has won four different events, led North to a 1A Midwest Regional title, and carried her success through the 1A State Championships with runners-up in both hurdles.

The difference between white and brown was basically four tenths of a second – White’s lead on beating Brown over 200 yards at the Rowan County Championships. It was one of White’s three wins that day. Brown won two district titles – the triple jump and the 100 hurdles.

North had a stellar freshman class that included not just Brown but state placers Tai’lah Ward and Brittany Ellis, as well as a crew of relay sprinters. North not only won the regional championship, but also won the Yadkin Valley Conference Championships.

South took second place at the Rowan County Championships and boasted a state champion in elite freshman high jumper Macy Miller. Miller won a 2A state title by vacating 5 feet, 4 inches. She broke records with a PR of 5-7 in regional competition.

Springer / sprinter Arnasjelle Corpening led Salisbury to a runner-up in the Central Carolina Conference Championships with 10 teams.

North’s Aaron Young and Carsons Ihme are the Post’s Assistant Coach of the Year.
