Longhorn Nation,

This week is a really special one because, in addition to all of the competitions our current teams will be competing in, we will be celebrating our Longhorn Legends in many sports on Friday night at the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor induction event. It will be a very unique year this year because we took a break from honoring the 2020 class of 14 as the COVID-19 protocols do not allow us to do this personally as a family. As a result, we will pay tribute to this group, as well as this year’s class of 10 initiates, in a great program. Twenty-four Great Longhorns – 23 former student athletes and one former coach – all together on a truly memorable Friday night at the Forty. It starts at 7 p.m. CT at the LBJ Auditorium and Conference Center on our campus and we hope you all will be there. I look forward to visiting and honoring these legendary longhorns and seeing you all there! You can still get your tickets to the show, which have general admission seats and are available for $ 25 per person. The newest members of the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor will also be honored during our football game with the State of Oklahoma on Saturday on the field and of course in the permanent exhibition at the Frank Denius Family University of Texas Athletics Hall of Fame in the south end of the DKR-Texas Memorial Stage.

As we look at the week, let’s take a moment to think about it. It didn’t end as we hoped it would, but what a wild it was at the 117th renewal of the AT&T Red River Showdown at the Cotton Bowl last Saturday. I had so much fun seeing you all at the show, I am grateful to our friends from College GameDay for putting our team and the game in the spotlight, and thank you Longhorn Nation for all of your great support. You definitely brought the energy and juice with you! The biggest rivalry games went to the end, our horns played their hearts, left everything on the field and despite so many great performances they achieved during the game, we only just came up short. As Coach Sark told the team, all we can do is learn from it, grow as a team and get up again this week to fight again. There is still a lot of football left and we are already back in full swing as our team turns their full attention to another big game in the Big 12. We’re going to set fire to BEVO Blvd. presented by HEB, Smokey’s Midway, LCL and all the fun and celebrations around the stadium when the sun rises and is charged shortly after for the team’s arrival. Let’s all get back together as a Longhorn family and cheer for our horns. You know the topic 2021 – Home is Where The Horns Are! Keep up the good work with the horns and we’ll see you early and lively on Saturday !!

And speaking of our UT family, I’d like to send a huge Hook ‘Em to our longtime Longhorn Arthur Johnson on his appointment as Vice President and Athletics Director of Temple and congratulations. As I told the people at Temple, Arthur is absolutely a home run rental company. He has experience in all facets of athletics and is truly a servant-leader who builds strong relationships and cares deeply about everyone he works with, especially the student athletes. He’s such a great person, did an incredible job for us and no one is better prepared for this opportunity. I’m really happy for him and T’Leatha and their son Aaron. Arthur has played a pivotal role in Texas Athletics for a long time, we will miss him and his family very much, but we know he worked extremely hard to be ready to take on this next challenge. Temple has a great man for the job. He will be a tremendous addition to the athletics department and its entire campus community. I can’t thank him enough for all he has done for Texas Athletics and I wish him and his family all the best in this exciting new chapter.

Back to Texas Sports and the fun is in winning! That’s exactly what Coach Kelly and our soccer team are doing, extending their unbeaten streak to eight games by beating the state of Iowa 2-0 last Friday. The atmosphere at Mike A. Myers Stadium was incredible, with 1,536 Burnt Orange-clad season fans in the house and the sounds of Austin Samba filling the air. With a 4-0-1 record in the league game, Burnt Orange & White are currently leading the table of the Big 12 in the regular season and, after their first five league games, remain unbeaten for the fourth time in program history. And this week we also moved up to the top 25 of the United Soccer Coaches survey. The Run BMG trio continued to demonstrate their incredible skill on the pitch as midfielders Lexi Missimo and Julia Grosso each scored goals against the Cyclones while striker Trinity Byars registered an assist to give her at least one in eight consecutive games Point to give! There’s only one game coming up this week, but it’s a big one in Waco as we go into a top 25 match with the nationally ranked Baylor on Friday at 7 p.m. CT. Let’s keep the good times going!

Our volleyball team, which is in first place, is also continuing its victories. Coach Elliott and our ladies took to the streets and faced their toughest game of the season, losing the first two sets to Kansas on Saturday. Our horns weren’t deterred, however, as they rallied to win the next three sets and complete the comeback win. With the swing of this five-part thriller, they were en fuego on Sunday, sweeping the Jayhawks in a dominant fashion. Speaking of street warriors, our Horns have won 16 games in a row in their opponents’ home gyms since 2019. No matter how loud the audience is, how loud the environment is, or how adverse it is to them, they will find a way to win these games in hostile territory. With that said, we can’t wait to welcome them home this weekend and see Longhorn Nation pack the Gregory Gym as we hold TCU every night Thursday and Friday at 7pm. As always, when you can’t be in the gym, you can watch the games on LHN.

Fall softball keeps rolling for Coach White and the Longhorns as Texas took wins over Grayson College (22-0, eight innings) and Texas State (7-4) last weekend to improve to 4-0 overall. Our team took advantage of the long ball to outperform Grayson when five different horns blew up homers while four different pitchers combined to throw a one-hit shutout. On Sunday against I-35 rivals Texas State, second baseman Janae Jefferson and shortstop McKenzie Parker each had four hits, while right fielder Jordyn Whitaker shot a 259-foot bomb off the scoreboard as he knocked down the Bobcats. Next up for the Horns is a trip to College Station to battle Texas A&M in 10 innings on Sunday, October 17th at 2:00 p.m. CT.
